Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Gala raises over $500,000
May 17, 2004
As Co-Chairman of the JDRF 2004 Dream Gala, Jim Kennel welcomed over 500 guests to the spring fund raising event resulting in more than $500,000 contributed to funding the cure for diabetes.
The black tie affair was dedicated to David Spira and Shirleyan Price whose efforts and financial commitment have been instrumental in building support for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of JDRF. Their son Jeremy, who has Type 1 diabetes, made a compelling presentation that night.
Gary Hall Jr. the gold medal swimmer and American 2004 Summer Olympic hopeful, who is also a Type 1 diabetic, hosted the evening. The evening's
festivities included a silent auction, a live auction, dinner and entertainment by the band Firefall.
"We were very gratified by the outpouring of generosity at the Gala. The evening capped a year's worth of planning and promotion," Mr. Kennel said.
"Both corporate and individual supporters helped us exceed our goal of $385,000."
A significant portion of these donations will support the Denver test center and the stem cell treatment therapy that holds the promise of the
cure for diabetes. Mr. Kennel pointed out in his address. "It is in everyone's best interest to cure diabetes. In addition to the human
suffering caused by this disease, diabetes related treatments represent over 25% of our federally funded healthcare system's costs. It is good public
and private fiscal policy to fund the cure for diabetes..."
Mr. Kennel is president of DMX Direct, Inc., a Gold Sponsor of The Garden of Hope Gala.
