Inter-Faith Community Services wants children to have a good experience on their first day of school.

That's why the nonprofit community service organization is asking sponsors to step up for the Ready, Set, School program, which provides new clothing and school supplies for children in Western Arapahoe and Northern Douglas counties.

The program is not new, but IFCS Executive Director Sandra Blythe-Perry said this year the nonprofit is hoping to reach the 692 families who registered and are newly unemployed.

"Our intent is to lessen the financial burden of back-to-school needs. We want the children to be properly equipped so they can begin on a positive note," said Blythe-Perry.

Jim Kennel heard about the program from a board member and thought so much of the program, he coordinated an e-referral marketing campaign using a personalized web program called iPURL at his company, DMX-Direct, to elicit contributions.

"It lets the staff concentrate on direct interaction with those truly interested in sponsorships, instead of spending time manually monitoring responses and tabulating results," said Kennel.

"They have propelled our fundraising efforts to the next level with this technology," said Blythe-Perry.

Kennel said of the 1,020 who received an email, 13 percent donated directly to IFCS or agreed to sponsor a child.

Blthe-Perry said the goal was to have backpacks filled with new (and personalized) clothing and school supplies by the first week of August.

Using the iPURL program at DMX, Kennel said interested donors are directed to a unique personal web page that enable the donor to choose different ways to assist children. Donors also can visit the IFCS web site at http://helpinterfaith.com.

Blythe-Perry said sponsors can expect to spend from $75 to $150 per child. Sponsors are matched to specific children, whose Information is provided on a form that lists their first name, age, grade, favorite color, hobbies and clothing sizes. Certificates for shoes and haircuts are requested to accompany the supplies and new clothes.

The deadline to deliver the items is July 31, so they are ready for kids the first week of August.

According to Blythe-Perry, many sponsors return year after year. Churches, other nonprofits and businesses sponsor a large numbers. Littleton United Methodist Church is doing 60, St. Andrew United Methodist is doing 30, Jackson National Life is doing 40 and Qwest Communications always does some. Backpacks are quality checked by the staff at IFCS and matched with specific children.

Denise Bender at Heritage United Methodist Church in Littleton said children in the vacation Bible school will bring in new school supplies which will be donated to Jeffco Action Center.

"We have done this for a lot of years. Part of being a church is getting people to understand we reach out to the community in different ways. To start with the children so they see how easy it is,it means a lot to them to see it benefits someone else," said Bender.

"The word gets out and sometimes people call back and say 'we will do 20 more.'" said Blythe-Perry.

"If people don't want to shop, they can send us a check for any amount," said Blythe Perry.

Blythe-Perry said "Sometimes the children are so excited when they pick up the backpacks, they want to get dressed right here in the lobby."
